Chevron deference
A judicial doctrine from the 1984 Supreme Court case Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, under which courts defer to a federal agency's reasonable interpretation of an ambiguous statute it administers. The doctrine has been central to debates about the scope of administrative power and was significantly curtailed by the Court in 2024.
