Consol

A perpetual bond that pays interest forever but never repays principal, first issued by the British government in 1751 to consolidate earlier debts. Consols demonstrate how governments can borrow indefinitely if creditors trust ongoing interest payments. They traded until 2015, when the UK finally redeemed them.
