Efficient frontier

The set of portfolios offering the highest expected return for each level of risk, forming a curve on a risk-return graph. Portfolios below the frontier are suboptimal because you could get higher returns for the same risk. Nobel laureate Harry Markowitz developed this concept in 1952.
