Evolutionarily Stable Strategy
A strategy which, if adopted by nearly every member of a population, cannot be improved upon or successfully invaded by any rare alternative strategy a mutation might introduce. John Maynard Smith's evolutionary version of a Nash equilibrium — a resting point that no individual deviation can profitably escape, except that no individual organism ever calculated it; it simply persists because natural selection rewards whatever out-reproduces the alternatives.
