Gold standard

A monetary system where currency can be exchanged for a fixed amount of gold. Dominant from the 1870s until 1971, when Nixon ended dollar-gold convertibility. Proponents valued its constraint on government spending; critics note it deepened the Great Depression by preventing monetary expansion when economies needed stimulus.
