Hard Power

Military and economic coercion — the ability to get what you want through force or payment, as opposed to soft power's reliance on attraction. Realist analysis of international relations centers on hard power; Joseph Nye argues the most effective foreign policy typically combines hard and soft power into 'smart power' rather than relying on either alone.
