Island biogeography
The study of species distribution on islands, formalized by Robert MacArthur and E.O. Wilson (1967). Predicts that species richness on an island is determined by immigration and extinction rates, which depend on island size and distance from the mainland. Has been applied to habitat fragments and conservation reserve design.
