Lender of last resort

A central bank function of providing emergency loans to solvent banks facing liquidity crises. Without this backstop, bank runs can spread from one institution to the entire system. The concept was articulated by Walter Bagehot in 1873: lend freely, at penalty rates, against good collateral.
