Leveraged buyout

An acquisition financed primarily with borrowed money, using the target company's assets and cash flows as collateral. Private equity firms use LBOs to buy companies, improve operations, and sell them for profit. Critics argue LBOs load companies with dangerous debt levels that can lead to bankruptcy during downturns.
