Narrative contagion

The spread of stories that justify and perpetuate speculative behavior. During the dot-com bubble, narratives about the 'new economy' convinced investors that traditional valuation metrics no longer applied. Compelling stories are more psychologically powerful than spreadsheets, which is why bubbles are primarily narrative phenomena.
