Islam's central scripture, understood by Muslims as the verbatim word of God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad across roughly twenty-three years in the early seventh century CE. Its identity as revelation is inseparable from its oral, recited dimension — the word "Quran" itself derives from a root meaning "recitation."
