Shadow of the Future

Robert Axelrod's term for the way an anticipated future encounter casts influence backward onto a present decision. The longer and more certain the shadow of the future — the more rounds expected, the more confident the relationship will continue — the more it pays to cooperate now, because the cost of future punishment outweighs the gain of cheating today.
