Shareholder primacy

The ideology that corporations exist primarily to maximize returns to shareholders, popularized by Milton Friedman's 1970 essay arguing that corporate social responsibility is a 'fundamentally subversive doctrine.' Critics contend this narrow focus encourages short-termism and externalizes costs onto workers, communities, and the environment.
