Sovereign default

When a government fails to make scheduled debt payments. Unlike corporate bankruptcy, there's no international court to enforce sovereign debt contracts. Defaults are typically resolved through negotiation, often with creditors accepting reduced payments. Default can cut a country off from international borrowing markets for years.
