Sovereignty
A state's supreme authority over its own territory and population, free from external control. Central to international relations both as the norm that a war of conquest is most directly charged with violating and as the basis on which smaller states (Finland and Sweden weighing NATO accession, Ukraine facing invasion) claim the right to choose their own alliances free of a larger neighbor's veto.
