Taboo
A prohibition, often carrying a sense of danger attached to violation rather than mere social disapproval, borrowed into English from Polynesian languages (most directly Tongan tapu). Taboo shows up with particular force during liminal periods — the ambiguous, in-between phase of a rite of passage — across the documented ethnographic record and in contemporary rituals like weddings and military training alike.
