Teleology
Explaining historical events by their endpoints or ultimate purposes, reading history backward from outcomes. Criticized when it implies inevitability—as if the past existed only to produce the present. Hegel's philosophy of history, seeing events as Spirit's necessary self-realization, exemplifies teleological thinking.
