Tiktaalik
A 375-million-year-old fossil fish discovered by Neil Shubin in the Canadian Arctic in 2004. A transitional form between fish and tetrapods: it had fins with wrist bones, a flat head with eyes on top, a neck, and primitive lungs alongside gills. Its discovery was predicted by evolutionary theory — Shubin looked in rocks of the right age and environment.
