Wallace's Line

A biogeographic boundary running through the Indonesian archipelago, separating Asian fauna (west) from Australasian fauna (east). First identified by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1859. Animals on either side differ dramatically despite close geographic proximity, reflecting deep tectonic and evolutionary history.
