Yellow journalism

Sensationalized, exaggerated news coverage that prioritizes sales over accuracy, named after the 1890s circulation wars between Hearst and Pulitzer newspapers. Characteristics include screaming headlines, dubious sources, and emotion over facts. Yellow journalism helped push the U.S. into the Spanish-American War - a cautionary tale about media's power to manufacture public opinion.
