Zero-Sum Game
A game in which one player's gain is exactly the other player's loss, so the payoffs in every cell of the payoff matrix sum to the same constant. Poker among a fixed group of players is zero-sum, but most strategic situations this course studies — cooperation, coordination, commitment — are not, which is the point: the popular image of game theory as zero-sum combat is precisely the misconception the course exists to correct.
