What earnings data actually shows about degrees vs. credentials vs. experience — medians, distributions, and when college debt exceeds the lifetime return.

The Number You Keep Hearing
You've probably heard it: a college degree earns you $1 million more over your lifetime than a high school diploma. That figure comes from real data, but it is doing a lot of work it probably shouldn't. Let's unpack what the earnings data actually shows — and what it hides.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes detailed earnings tables every year. In 2023, the median weekly earnings for a worker with a bachelor's degree were $1,493 — compared to $899 for a high school diploma only. Annualized, that gap is about $30,000 per year. Multiply over 40 years and you get a large number. But the operative word is median — the midpoint of all workers with that credential. Half earn more, half earn less.
The problem: that median includes a Stanford computer science graduate earning $180,000 and a communications major at a regional university earning $38,000. Both count. The median obscures the distribution, and the distribution is where the real decision lives.

Reading the Distribution, Not Just the Median
When the Federal Reserve Bank of New York published its analysis of college majors and earnings, they found that the 25th percentile for a psychology bachelor's degree earns about $35,000 per year — less than the median earnings for a plumber ($59,880 in 2023 per BLS). The 75th percentile for psychology earns $65,000. The range within a single credential is enormous.
What this means for decision-making: The question isn't "what does the average person with a degree earn?" It's "what does a person with my specific degree, from my type of institution, working in my intended field earn at the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile?"
Key data points to internalize:
- Computer science (BS): median ~$104,000; 25th percentile ~$72,000. Strong floor.
- Nursing (BSN): median ~$81,000; nearly all nursing jobs require the credential. Mandatory premium.
- Fine arts (BFA): median ~$48,000; 25th percentile ~$29,000. Highly variable.
- Electrical apprenticeship (no degree): journeyman median ~$61,000; master electrician median ~$80,000+ with no student debt.
- Licensed practical nurse (LPN, 1-year certificate): median ~$54,000; path to RN via bridge program.
None of these are "bad" choices in the abstract. They are equations with different variables.

Not on its own. The 67% figure is based on median earnings across all degree holders and all diploma holders — it blends every major, every institution, and every career field. A student deciding whether to pursue a specific degree in a specific field needs field-specific earnings data, including the distribution (not just the median), and must account for tuition costs, loan payments, and opportunity cost during enrollment years. Aggregate statistics hide the variance that makes individual decisions risky.
The Opportunity Cost Nobody Calculates
Every year spent in a degree program is a year not spent earning. If a 4-year degree costs $120,000 in tuition and living expenses, and you would have earned $35,000 per year working full time, the true cost is $120,000 + $140,000 in foregone wages = $260,000 before a single loan payment is made.
This is called opportunity cost — the value of the next-best thing you didn't do. It doesn't appear on any tuition bill, but it is real.
Now consider two paths:
- Path A (degree): Borrows $80,000 at 6.5% interest over 10 years. Pays $907/month. Earns $55,000/year starting at 22.
- Path B (apprenticeship): Earns $20/hour at 18 during 4-year apprenticeship (~$40,000/year). Journeyman at 22 earning $60,000/year, no debt.
By age 30, Path B has accumulated 8 years of earnings with no debt service. Path A has accumulated 8 years of earnings minus ~$87,000 in loan payments. The breakeven — the year Path A's cumulative earnings surpass Path B's — depends entirely on the salary gap between the two fields, which in many trades is smaller than most students assume.

Think about a specific career you have considered. What would the true cost of the education pathway to reach that career actually be — including opportunity cost? What salary would you need to earn, and by what age, to break even on that investment?
When the Premium is Real
The education premium is genuine and significant in specific contexts:
Medicine and law: Physicians with specialization earn $250,000–$400,000+ annually. Attorneys at large firms earn $200,000+ at entry level. The credential is mandatory, the premium is enormous, and the debt is large but recoverable — if you finish and get the job. These paths carry significant selection risk.
Engineering and CS: STEM fields with high employer demand show strong premiums with relatively low variance. A mechanical engineering degree from a state university costing $60,000 total with a starting salary of $75,000 has a breakeven under 5 years.
Credential-required fields: Nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, and accounting (CPA track) require the degree legally. The premium isn't optional.
The exception class: Fields where the credential is not required by law, not screened for strictly by employers, and median earnings are near or below skilled trade earnings. This includes many social science, humanities, and arts fields — not because those subjects lack value, but because the labor market does not pay a large premium for the degree specifically.

In a mandatory premium field like nursing or pharmacy, employers legally require the credential, so the degree is a prerequisite rather than a signal — you cannot do the job without it, and employers pay for the qualification. In an optional premium field, the degree signals ability or knowledge to employers but is not legally required. In those fields, other credentials or demonstrated experience can substitute, and the premium may not justify the cost depending on specific major and earnings outcomes.
What the Research Actually Shows
The frequently-cited earnings premium partly reflects selection effects — the people who graduate from college differ systematically from those who don't in ways that affect earnings regardless of the degree. Smarter, more disciplined, more socially networked students tend to get degrees and earn more. Researchers have tried to isolate the pure credential effect; estimates range from substantial to modest depending on the field and methodology.
This doesn't mean degrees are worthless — it means the raw earnings gap overstates the value added by the credential alone. When a high-aptitude person chooses a trade apprenticeship, they often outperform average degree holders because they're combining high ability with a credential that has a strong labor market, no debt, and an earlier start on compound career growth.
The most rigorous conclusion the data supports: the education premium is real, large in some fields, small or negative in others, and depends more on field and institution than on the degree itself.
Assignment
Using the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook (bls.gov/ooh) and the College Scorecard (collegescorecard.ed.gov):
- Select one career field that interests you.
- Identify all credential pathways that lead to entry-level employment in that field (certificate, associate, bachelor's, apprenticeship, military training, etc.).
- For each pathway: record the credential cost, duration, and median starting salary reported by the data.
- Calculate the breakeven year for the most expensive pathway vs. the least expensive pathway.
- Write a 1-page memo making the case for the pathway you would choose and why — using numbers, not opinions.
