The first episode of Pulling the Thread opens with host Cara Santa Maria declaring that 'the real dark mastermind behind conspiracy thinking is us -- all of us are susceptible, everybody does it, left and right, it's a product of our brains.' The episode traces how losing -- whether an election, a sense of safety, or control over your life -- triggers conspiracy thinking, using a study by Parent and Uscinski showing that before elections both parties are equally paranoid about rigging, but afterward 'a switch gets flipped' and the losing side becomes convinced the system is corrupt. At just eight minutes, this is the perfect Unit 1 companion because it introduces the course's central premise -- that our thinking errors are systematic and predictable, not random -- through the most accessible possible entry point: our own reactions to losing. Students should watch this before reading the unit to calibrate their self-awareness about their own susceptibility to motivated reasoning.

Here's a question that might seem obvious but isn't: What is history?
Most of us would say history is "what happened in the past." But think about it: right now, countless things are happening all over the world. People are being born and dying. Wars are being fought. Discoveries are being made. Injustices are being committed. Acts of kindness are occurring. Most of these events will never be recorded. They'll vanish, unknown and unremembered.
History isn't everything that happened. History is what someone decided was worth remembering.
And that changes everything.
Who Gets to Tell the Story?
Think about the American Revolution. Whose story do we usually learn?
We learn about the Founding Fathers—Washington, Jefferson, Adams. We learn about battles and declarations and the Constitution. We might learn that the colonists were angry about "taxation without representation."
But whose perspective is that? Let's look at some people who experienced the Revolution but rarely appear in our textbooks:

Trumbull's famous painting shows the Founders presenting the Declaration. Who is missing from this room?
The enslaved: When Thomas Jefferson wrote "all men are created equal," he owned over 600 enslaved people during his lifetime. When the Revolution began, enslaved people had to make a choice: Which side offered them freedom? Many chose the British, who promised emancipation to enslaved people who escaped patriot owners. When the British lost, those who had fought for their own freedom were re-enslaved or had to flee.
The Indigenous nations: For most Native peoples, the Revolution wasn't about liberty—it was about land. The Royal Proclamation of 1763 had limited colonial expansion westward. American independence meant that restriction was gone. The Revolution was, in part, a war for the right to take Native land.
Women: The Revolution's language of liberty didn't extend to women. Abigail Adams famously wrote to her husband John Adams asking him to "remember the ladies" in the new nation's laws. He laughed it off. Women couldn't vote, own property in most cases, or participate in the government the Revolution created.
None of these perspectives are more or less "true" than the traditional story. But they reveal that the history we learned was a choice—a choice about whose experiences mattered and whose could be ignored.

Primary Sources: Hearing Voices from the Past
How do we actually know what happened in the past? We can't go back and see it. We have to rely on what people left behind: documents, artifacts, images, objects. These are called primary sources—things created at the time of the event by people who were there.
Primary sources are our window into the past. But windows can be dirty, cracked, or facing the wrong direction.
Consider this: Most primary sources from before the 20th century were created by wealthy, educated men—because they were the ones who could write, whose words were considered worth preserving, whose documents were stored in archives. The voices of women, enslaved people, workers, and the poor are much harder to find.
When we do find them, they can transform our understanding.
"[I am writing to demand] that you send me the money which you owe me, or else I will sell your old grandmother... You know what we raised you, and we never meant you should go off this way."
Sarah Logue wrote to a man she had once enslaved, who had escaped to freedom in Canada. She demanded that he return or send her $1,000. His response reveals a perspective rarely found in archives.
"You say, 'You know we raised you as we did our own children.' Woman, did you raise your own children for the market? Did you raise them for the whipping post?... Shame on you!... I stand among a free people, where the law holds me, a man, equal with every other man."
Loguen's response was published in abolitionist newspapers. It gives us a formerly enslaved person's direct voice—rare in the historical record.
These letters are primary sources. They let us hear directly from people who lived through slavery—both an enslaver and an enslaved person who escaped. Notice how differently they describe the same institution. Logue speaks of "raising" Loguen as if she did him a favor. Loguen speaks of being raised "for the market" and "the whipping post."
Both letters are "true" in the sense that both people genuinely believed what they wrote. But they tell us very different things about what slavery actually was.
Think About
Think about a source you've encountered recently — a social media post, a textbook, a documentary, a news article. Who created it? What was their position or interest? What might they have left out? Does knowing who created it change how much you trust it?

Secondary Sources: Making Sense of the Past
Primary sources are raw material. To turn them into history, someone has to interpret them—to select which sources to use, to explain what they mean, to construct a narrative.
These interpretations are called secondary sources: books, articles, documentaries, and textbooks created after the fact by people studying the past.
Secondary sources are essential. Most of us will never read the thousands of documents a historian reads to write a book. We rely on historians to do that work for us. But we have to remember: every secondary source is someone's interpretation, shaped by their questions, their values, and sometimes their blind spots.
Here's an example: For nearly a century, the dominant historical narrative said that Reconstruction—the period after the Civil War—was a terrible mistake. History books described it as a time of corruption and "negro rule," when incompetent freed people and corrupt northerners ran southern governments into the ground.
This interpretation, developed by a group of historians at Columbia University in the early 1900s, justified Jim Crow segregation. If Black political participation had been a disaster, then taking away Black voting rights was reasonable.
It took another generation of historians, including W.E.B. Du Bois, to challenge this narrative. Du Bois showed that Reconstruction had actually created schools, hospitals, and democratic institutions—and that it was destroyed not by Black incompetence but by white terrorism.
"The slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again toward slavery."
Du Bois's massive work challenged the dominant racist interpretation of Reconstruction and became a model for how historians could challenge established narratives.
The facts didn't change. The interpretation did—because different historians asked different questions, valued different evidence, and had different investments in the outcome.

Logical Fallacies: How Arguments Go Wrong
Throughout history, people have used faulty reasoning to justify terrible things. Learning to recognize these patterns—called logical fallacies—is essential for understanding how power works and how injustice is defended.
Ad Hominem: Attacking the Person, Not the Argument

Frederick Douglass, c. 1877. The most photographed American of the 19th century, Douglass understood the power of images to challenge racist stereotypes.
When Frederick Douglass spoke against slavery, defenders of slavery didn't primarily argue that slavery was good. They argued that Douglass couldn't really have written his own autobiography—that a Black man couldn't be that eloquent. They attacked the person rather than addressing his arguments.
This is ad hominem reasoning: "You shouldn't listen to what they say because of who they are."
We see this constantly. When women speak about sexism, they're called "too emotional." When young people advocate for climate action, they're told they're "too young to understand." The arguments themselves go unanswered.
False Equivalence: "Both Sides"
"There were fine people on both sides."
That's what President Trump said after the 20172017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a neo-Nazi murdered a counter-protester.
This is false equivalence: treating two things as comparable when they're not. Neo-Nazis and people protesting against neo-Nazis are not morally equivalent, no matter how much you might want to appear "balanced."
False equivalence is powerful because it sounds reasonable. "Let's hear both sides." "The truth is somewhere in the middle." But sometimes one side is simply wrong. The "debate" over whether the Earth is flat doesn't deserve equal time with established science. The "debate" over whether the Holocaust happened doesn't deserve equal time with historical fact.
The Slippery Slope: Fear of Change
"If we give women the vote, next they'll want to hold office, then they'll stop having children, and civilization will collapse!"
That's a slippery slope argument—claiming that one small change will inevitably lead to catastrophic consequences. It's been used against virtually every expansion of rights in history.
When interracial marriage was legalized, opponents warned it would lead to the breakdown of the family. When same-sex marriage was debated, opponents warned of the same thing. The families are still here.
Slippery slope arguments are designed to make modest changes seem terrifying. They work by imagination rather than evidence.
How Fallacies Justified Slavery
Consider how these fallacies were combined to defend slavery:
- Appeal to authority: "The Bible says servants should obey their masters." (Using religious authority rather than moral argument)
- Hasty generalization: "Africans are naturally suited to slavery because of their climate and character." (Drawing vast conclusions from prejudice)
- Begging the question: "Slavery is natural because some people are naturally slaves." (Assuming what you're trying to prove)
- Ad hominem: "Abolitionists are fanatics who hate the South." (Attacking opponents rather than their arguments)
Recognizing these patterns doesn't just help us understand the past. It helps us see when the same tricks are being used today.

Bias and Perspective: Everyone Sees Partially
There's an old parable about blind men and an elephant. One man touches the trunk and says the elephant is like a snake. Another touches the leg and says it's like a tree. A third touches the side and says it's like a wall.
Each man is telling the truth about what he experienced. None of them is seeing the whole elephant.
This is how perspective works. We all see the world from where we stand—shaped by our experiences, our communities, our interests. That's not a flaw; it's human. The problem comes when we mistake our partial view for the whole truth.
Bias is when our perspective causes us to distort or ignore evidence that doesn't fit what we already believe. Everyone has perspective. Not everyone recognizes when perspective becomes bias.
Consider your own perspective:
- What country were you born in? That shapes what history you learned.
- What's your family's economic situation? That shapes how you understand poverty and wealth.
- What's your race, gender, religion? Each of these shapes what you notice and what you overlook.
This isn't something to feel guilty about. It's something to be aware of. The goal isn't to eliminate perspective—that's impossible. The goal is to know you have one, to seek out other perspectives, and to be humble about what you might be missing.

What Makes an Argument?
We've been talking about claims, evidence, and logic — but what exactly is an argument? Not an argument in the sense of a fight, but an argument as a tool of reasoning.
Every argument has three parts. First, there is the claim: the statement you're trying to convince someone is true. Second, there is the evidence: the facts, data, examples, or testimony that support the claim. Third, there is the reasoning: the logical connection that explains why the evidence actually supports the claim. A claim without evidence is just an opinion. Evidence without reasoning is just data. An argument that connects all three is the basic unit of critical thinking.
Here's why this matters: evidence can be strong or weak. Strong evidence is specific, verifiable, and directly relevant to the claim. Weak evidence is vague, untestable, or only tangentially related. When Thomas Jefferson argued that "all men are created equal," the claim was powerful — but the evidence and reasoning behind it collapsed the moment you looked at who was excluded. Recognizing the difference between strong and weak evidence is a skill you will use in every unit of this course. Ask yourself: Does this evidence actually support this specific claim? Could the same evidence support a different conclusion? What evidence would contradict it?

Think About
Think of a claim you've heard recently — a news headline, something a family member said, or a belief you hold yourself. Can you identify the evidence behind it? Is that evidence strong or weak? What would it take to change your mind?
Asking the Right Questions
Throughout this course, we'll be developing a habit of critical questioning. Here are the questions that cut through propaganda, reveal hidden assumptions, and expose the interests behind narratives:
About any source or claim:
- Who created this? What was their position and interest?
- When was it created? What was happening at that time?
- What evidence supports this? What evidence might contradict it?
- Who benefits if people believe this? Who is harmed?
- What perspectives are missing?
About historical events:
- Whose story is being told? Whose is being ignored?
- How might different groups have experienced this event?
- What were the long-term consequences, and for whom?
- How is this event remembered today, and why?
About ourselves:
- What do I already believe about this? Why?
- What would it take to change my mind?
- What might I be missing because of who I am?
These questions are tools. The more you practice using them, the harder it becomes to be fooled—by others or by yourself.

Probabilistic Thinking: Beyond True and False
So far we've talked about evaluating claims as if they were either true or false. But here's an uncomfortable reality: for most important questions, certainty is impossible. The honest question isn't "Is this true?" but "How confident should I be?"
Think about how you actually hold beliefs. You're not 100% certain the sun will rise tomorrow—you're 99.999% confident based on past experience. You're not certain your best friend will keep a secret—but you might be 90% confident based on their track record. You're not certain the Civil War was primarily about slavery—but after reading Confederate leaders' own words, you might be 98% confident.
This is probabilistic thinking: recognizing that beliefs come in degrees of confidence, not binary true/false categories.
Why This Matters for Critical Thinking
When we pretend beliefs are either 100% certain or completely unknown, we make predictable errors:
We become overconfident. If something feels true, we treat it as certain. But "feels true" isn't the same as "is true." Many things that felt obviously true to past generations—that the Earth was the center of the universe, that some races were naturally inferior—turned out to be wrong.
We dismiss uncertainty as weakness. In debates, the person who says "I'm not sure" often loses to the person who sounds certain—even when the uncertain person is more honest about the evidence.
We fail to update. If beliefs are either true or false, new evidence doesn't change anything—we already "know" the answer. But if beliefs come in degrees, every piece of evidence should shift our confidence, even if only slightly.
Evidence Updates Confidence
Good thinkers don't just collect evidence—they let evidence change how confident they are. This works in both directions:
- Evidence that confirms your belief should make you more confident (but not infinitely confident)
- Evidence that contradicts your belief should make you less confident (but not infinitely doubtful)
Consider the Lost Cause myth we'll study later in this unit. How confident should we be that the Civil War was about slavery?
Before reading Confederate leaders' own words: maybe 70% confident, based on what you'd heard. After reading Mississippi's declaration that their position was "thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery": 95% confident. After reading multiple states' declarations, Confederate Vice President Stephens' "cornerstone speech," and finding no contemporary documents claiming states' rights was the primary cause: 99% confident.
Notice: we didn't jump from uncertainty to certainty. We accumulated evidence and let each piece shift our confidence incrementally.
Intellectual Honesty Means Tracking Uncertainty
The most important habit for critical thinkers is asking: "How confident am I, and why?"
Think About
Pick a belief you hold strongly — about history, about your community, about how the world works. On a scale from 50% (a coin flip) to 99% (almost certain), how confident are you? What evidence would bump you up to the next level? What evidence would drop you down? Most people find this exercise harder than it sounds.
This requires a kind of intellectual bookkeeping. For any belief you hold:
- What evidence supports it?
- What evidence contradicts it?
- How much should each piece of evidence shift your confidence?
- What would make you more confident? Less confident?
This isn't natural. Our brains prefer certainty. But the world doesn't care what our brains prefer. Reality is uncertain, and honest thinking reflects that uncertainty.

Case Study: The Lost Cause—A Lie That Became "History"

The Confederate Monument at Arlington National Cemetery, erected in 1914. Most Confederate monuments were built during Jim Crow, not immediately after the war.
Now let's apply everything we've learned to one of the most successful propaganda campaigns in American history: the Lost Cause myth.
What the South Actually Said
In 18611861, when Southern states left the Union, they didn't hide why they were doing it. They put it in writing.
"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery—the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth... A blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization."
Mississippi's declaration is remarkably clear. It's not subtle. It's not ambiguous. It says exactly what it means.
South Carolina's declaration mentioned slavery 18 times. Georgia's mentioned it 35 times. Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens gave a speech declaring that the new government's "foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery... is his natural and normal condition."
There's no ambiguity here. The Confederacy was created to preserve slavery. They said so themselves.
The Lie Begins
But then the Confederacy lost. And after the war, something remarkable happened: Southerners began telling a different story.

'The Birth of a Nation' (1915) portrayed the Ku Klux Klan as heroic saviors. President Wilson reportedly said it was 'like writing history with lightning.'
The Lost Cause narrative claimed:
- The war wasn't about slavery—it was about "states' rights" and Southern honor
- Enslaved people were happy and well-treated
- Reconstruction was a disaster of "negro rule" and Northern corruption
- The Confederacy was a noble cause that deserved to be honored
This was a complete inversion of the historical record. But it worked.
How the Lie Spread
The Lost Cause didn't succeed because it was true. It succeeded because powerful people worked systematically to make it the accepted narrative.
The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), founded in 18941894, ran one of the most effective propaganda campaigns in American history. They:
- Vetted school textbooks, pressuring publishers to remove anything critical of the Confederacy
- Sponsored essay contests that rewarded students for writing Lost Cause narratives
- Built monuments on courthouse lawns and in public squares
- Organized commemorations of Confederate heroes
The monuments were particularly strategic. Most Confederate monuments weren't built in the years immediately after the war, when grief was fresh. They were built in two waves: during the height of Jim Crow segregation (1890s-1920s), and during the Civil Rights Movement (1950s-1960s).
These weren't memorials to the dead. They were messages to the living—especially to Black citizens demanding equal rights. The monuments said: "We lost the war, but we won the peace. This is still our country."
Why It Matters Now
For generations, American students learned Lost Cause narratives as history. Many still do. Polls show that many Americans believe the Civil War was primarily about states' rights rather than slavery—despite what Confederate leaders themselves said.
This matters because it shows how history can be rewritten to serve power. The Lost Cause:
- Erased the central role of slavery in American history
- Justified Jim Crow segregation as a return to "proper" race relations
- Created heroes out of men who fought to keep millions of people in bondage
- Made honest conversation about racism more difficult
