Adverse Selection
The process by which information asymmetry systematically drives higher-quality participants out of a market or pool, leaving a worse-than-average selection behind, because pricing calibrated to an average unfairly discounts the better participants. Akerlof traced this through the used-car market, where a price reflecting average quality pushes owners of genuinely good cars to withdraw, driving average quality — and price — down further still.
