Costly Signal

A signal whose credibility comes specifically from the fact that it would be too expensive, difficult, or risky for a lower-quality sender to fake — the warranty a lemon-seller cannot afford to offer, the elaborate tail a sickly peacock cannot afford to grow, the degree a less-capable candidate finds disproportionately harder to complete. Known across biology and economics as the handicap principle.
