Credible Threat
A threat that the party being threatened rationally believes will actually be carried out, as opposed to a threat that is merely stated but understood to be a bluff and therefore safely ignored. A threat or promise only functions strategically if the other party believes it will be honored even after it stops being convenient — which is exactly what a commitment device is designed to manufacture by removing the actor's own ability to back out.
