Design Principles (Ostrom)
Elinor Ostrom's set of eight recurring features found across successful self-governing commons: clearly defined boundaries, rules matched to local conditions, collective-choice arrangements, monitoring, graduated sanctions, conflict-resolution mechanisms, minimal recognition of the community's right to organize, and — for larger commons — nested enterprises. Each principle functions as a mechanism for solving the free-rider problem without resorting to privatization or state control.
