End-Permian extinction
The most severe mass extinction in Earth's history, approximately 252 million years ago, killing 96% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial vertebrate species. Caused primarily by massive volcanic eruptions (Siberian Traps) that released enormous quantities of CO2, triggering ocean acidification and anoxia.
