Endosymbiosis
The evolutionary process by which one organism lives inside another, with both becoming mutually dependent. Lynn Margulis's endosymbiotic theory (1967) proposed that mitochondria and chloroplasts originated as free-living bacteria engulfed by ancestral cells. Initially ridiculed, now confirmed by overwhelming evidence.
