Eukaryote
An organism whose cells contain a membrane-bound nucleus and organelles, including mitochondria. All complex multicellular life (plants, animals, fungi) is eukaryotic. Eukaryotes arose through endosymbiosis — an archaeon engulfing a bacterium — approximately 2 billion years ago, in what Nick Lane calls the single most consequential event in evolution.
