Fiduciary duty

A legal obligation to act in another party's best interest rather than one's own. Investment advisors owe fiduciary duty to clients; corporate directors owe it to shareholders. Breach of fiduciary duty can result in lawsuits and damages. The standard is stricter than merely avoiding fraud.
