Functional differentiation
In Luhmann's systems theory, the primary structural principle of modern society in which distinct subsystems (law, economy, politics, science, education, religion) emerge to handle specific societal functions. Each subsystem operates autonomously according to its own logic, unlike earlier forms of social organization based on stratification or segmentation.
