Genetic bottleneck
A sharp reduction in the genetic diversity of a population due to a drastic reduction in population size. The out-of-Africa bottleneck (~70,000 years ago) means all non-African humans descend from a small founding population, explaining why Africa contains more human genetic diversity than the rest of the world combined.
