Gift Economy
A system of exchange organized around obligated giving and reciprocation rather than priced, alienated commodity trade. Marcel Mauss argued that gift-giving in what he called archaic societies runs on three interlocking obligations — to give, to receive, and to reciprocate — and that the 'free gift' with no expected return is, in practice, a social fiction that makes the underlying obligation bearable to perform.
