Potlatch
A ceremonial feast among Northwest Coast nations such as the Kwakwaka'wakw, Tlingit, and Haida, at which a hosting individual or clan gives away, and sometimes ceremonially destroys, large quantities of accumulated wealth before invited witnesses. The potlatch functioned as redistribution, as a competitive rank- and status-making ceremony, and as a formal, witnessed occasion for transferring names and titles; the Canadian government banned it from 1885 to 1951, an act most historians now read as an attack on Indigenous self-governance rather than the stated concern over economic waste.
