Hox genes
A group of homeobox genes that regulate body plan development along the head-to-tail axis. Remarkably conserved across animal phyla: the same Hox genes control segment identity in flies, vertebral identity in mice, and limb development in humans. Their regulatory evolution — not their invention — drove the Cambrian explosion.
