Cambrian explosion
The geologically rapid appearance of most major animal body plans in the fossil record, approximately 540-520 million years ago. Not primarily driven by the evolution of new genes, but by new ways of regulating existing developmental genes (Hox genes). Preceded by the Ediacaran biota and possibly triggered by rising oxygen levels.
