Burgess Shale
A fossil deposit in the Canadian Rockies (British Columbia) preserving extraordinary soft-bodied organisms from the Cambrian period (~508 Mya). Discovered by Charles Walcott in 1909, reinterpreted by Gould and others in the 1980s, it provides the most detailed window into the diversity of early animal life.
