Index fund

An investment fund that tracks a market index (like the S&P 500) by holding the same stocks in the same proportions. Because index funds don't require expensive analysts, they charge minimal fees. Research shows most actively managed funds fail to beat their benchmark index over time, making index funds the default recommendation for most investors.
