Iridium anomaly

An unusually high concentration of the element iridium in a thin clay layer at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary worldwide. Discovered by Luis and Walter Alvarez (1980), it provided the key evidence for the asteroid impact hypothesis of dinosaur extinction, since iridium is rare on Earth but common in asteroids.
