The well-documented pattern, found across a wide range of societies including the contemporary United States, of individuals and communities drawing on multiple medical systems and explanatory frameworks simultaneously or sequentially rather than relying on one exclusively — moving between a biomedical clinic, complementary or alternative practices, and informal advice depending on the condition, cost, trust, and perceived severity involved.
