Underground networks of fungal hyphae connecting plant roots, facilitating the transfer of nutrients, water, and chemical signals between plants. Sometimes called the "Wood Wide Web." Over 90% of land plant species depend on mycorrhizal associations, which predate the evolution of roots themselves.
