Natural selection
The mechanism of evolution identified by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace: organisms with heritable traits better suited to their environment tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates, passing those traits to offspring. Natural selection acts on variation within populations, is relative to specific environmental conditions, and produces adaptation — not progress toward any ideal form.
