Red Queen hypothesis

Leigh Van Valen's (1973) evolutionary principle that organisms must continuously evolve just to maintain their relative fitness in a co-evolutionary arms race. Named after the Red Queen in Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking-Glass": "It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place."
