The hypothesis that RNA preceded both DNA and proteins as the primary molecule of early life, serving as both genetic material and catalyst. Supported by the discovery of ribozymes (catalytic RNA molecules) and the central role of RNA in modern cells. Jack Szostak's laboratory work has demonstrated RNA self-replication in simple systems.
