Alkaline hydrothermal vent
A type of deep-sea hydrothermal vent that produces warm (40-90°C), highly alkaline fluids rich in hydrogen. Unlike black smokers, alkaline vents create natural proton gradients across thin mineral walls — conditions that may have driven the origin of life. The Lost City field, discovered in 2000, is the best-known example.
