Proton gradient
A difference in hydrogen ion (proton) concentration across a membrane, used by all living cells to generate ATP through chemiosmosis. Nick Lane's central argument: natural proton gradients at alkaline hydrothermal vents preceded and drove the origin of life — cells didn't invent this energy mechanism, they inherited it from geochemistry.
