Sickle cell trait

The heterozygous condition for sickle cell hemoglobin (one normal and one sickle cell allele), which provides significant resistance to malaria with minimal health costs. A textbook example of co-evolution: the malaria parasite drove the evolution of protective hemoglobin variants in African populations.
