Subsistence Strategy

A society's fundamental method of extracting food from its environment. Anthropologists recognize five broad types — foraging, pastoralism, horticulture, agriculture, and industrial food production — each a complete, internally coherent knowledge system adapted to specific environmental and social conditions, rather than rungs on a ladder of progress from primitive to advanced.
