Three domains of life
Carl Woese's classification of all life into three fundamental groups based on ribosomal RNA sequences: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. This discovery (1977) was revolutionary — it revealed that organisms formerly lumped together as "bacteria" actually comprised two fundamentally different domains as distinct from each other as either is from plants and animals.
